Who am I?

FOR READERS
Why did you start New Babel Books?
New Babel Books exists because there are authors out there who have extraordinary projects that don't fit easily into the pigeonholes of today's industry. That makes it harder for them to find publisher. Consequently, it makes it harder for you, the reader, to find truly ground-breaking work. New Babel Books serves to bring the two of you together.
What genres do you publish?
Currently our fiction titles run the gamut from literary romance to hard-hitting science fiction and magical realism. We also publish poetry, speculative fiction, mystery, horror, and adventure. We are not opposed to broadening that horizon for the right book, or the right author.
How many books does New Babel release a year?
Our 2006 schedule is for six books.
Where can I buy New Babel books?
The short answer is, "Wherever fine books are sold." We are, of course, available on Amazon and this site, but any bookstore with distribution through Baker & Taylor can get us on their shelves.
How do I find out more about upcoming releases?
Subscribe to our announcement list! You'll be alerted to new books as they're released, as well as pre-order specials, author chats, local signings and more.
I want to write a letter to one of your authors. Where do I send it?
Because we respect the privacy of our authors, we ask that all correspondence to them be directed through us via the online form on this page. We will pass along your note to them.
What's your return policy?
We do not accept returns at this time.
FOR WRITERS AND BOOKSELLERS
Are you a vanity press?
Not at all. Every title here is passed through the same editorial process before we agree to publish the book. No one may simply buy their way in.
Will you consider unagented/unpublished authors?
Absolutely. In fact, we prefer them. We're looking for people who are hungry and still willing to lose some shoe leather getting their books into readers hands.
Do you charge any fees?
No. None. We would advise against working with any publisher who did. We do, however, negotiate better ad rates through national magazines and encourage our authors to purchase those ads to promote their books. We receive none of the funds for those ad buys.
What's the submission process?
See our submission page, here. The process is simple: If your pitch catches our eye, we'll take the next step.
About what percentage of submissions do you accept?
Thus far, our average on unsolicited work has been less than 10%. We do make it a point of seeking out new talent, though.
Do you have distribution into bookstores?
Yes. Our brick and mortar distribution is through Baker & Taylor.
Is there anything you absolutely will not publish?
The list is short, but obvious. We will not publish anything with a message of hate, no kiddie porn, etc. We don't oppose erotica with a purpose or über-violence that serves the story. Common sense prevails here.
